Raw fleece ~ Spinning
I was dreaming of a future where I would sit by the fire & spin the fleeces of our sheep & alpacas. I’d have a spinning wheel & I’d make yarn ready for Alex to knit into garments that we would wear on our farm. I think it will remain a dream as there is so much for me to do that I’m not really sure spinning is in my future. However, the practice & skill still excites me. I hope to be able to share in others love for spinning by providing beautiful fleeces for this craft. Fleeces from sheep we raise & we love & that most likely have a name.
Whole fleeces from our animals have been carefully skirted to leave only the cleanest staples. Preparation of the fleeces happens soon after shearing with the sorting for processing wrapping up by the end of the year. Skirted fleece starts at $55 per kilogram with the option to purchase by the half kilogram. We aim for the majority of the fleece you receive to be made up of a minimum of 80mm staples. We try to remove as much VM as possible but you might find the odd piece of hay or grass seed. We keep each fleece separate so as not to mix them when packing & sending. If you order more fleece than is available from one animal we will keep them seperate in your order & clearly labeled so you can decide what to blend for yourself. When choosing fleece from the drop down menu be sure to scroll up to check the photo. The corresponding photo will be displayed upon fleece selection.
We run Huacaya alpacas, pure East Friesian sheep, pure coloured Finnsheep as well as a cross that we’re working on improving the fleece of. Our East Friesian X Finn sheep is an exciting project that we hope to be able to offer the wool from in 2026. If you’re interested in spinning this please get in touch. I’d really love to work with an experienced spinner to give feedback on this fleece so we can improve in the coming years.
All fleeces are sent raw, without having been scoured. They will contain dust & dirt from our farm. Whilst we do a thorough job skirting, there will still be some VM (vegetable matter) & possibly some tip damage. I try very hard to keep the sheep away from the hawthorns but by the time it gets close to shearing they are all starting to rub on anything they can find!
If you’re interested in a coated fleece please send a direct email & we can discuss price & what that will entail.
