Sheep's skin

$250.00

I remember when I was a kid, everyone had a sheep’s skin in their house. I swear all mums used to change the baby on one to keep it warm, then onto tummy time. It feels like something that’s gone out of fashion but I think there’s more to it than that. This is very much in line with our no waste philosophy & I hope to bring back the sheepy change-table. I know a friend who has one on the floor under her desk, to keep her feet warm while smashing the keyboard. Another mate has one on the driver’s seat in his ute, what a luxury… or is it?

One of the benefits of the micro abattoir is being able to retain the skins & hides of our animals. Since this is an item that requires a few humans to do a lot of small tasks over many weeks I can’t give an exact time for delivery. I can however keep you in the loop & give a loose commitment to the first quarter of 2026.

The Greenhalgh’s tannery in Ballarat has been in operation for over 150 years. Can you imagine how much experience & knowledge is kept in that place? Your sheep’s skin will be physically handled at least 25 times during it’s tanning journey.

This journey can be broken down into 10 main processing stages. These are; rehydration, fleshing, washing, pickling, shaving, tanning, fatliquoring, tacking out, drying, tumbling. Being involved in preserving these artisan skills & hopefully the passing on of the knowledge excites me, I hope it excites you too.
